January Message from Carol Jackson, Executive Director

Families and Friends,

Happy 2025!

I realize we are a month into the new year, and we have already experienced a large amount of snow, frigid temperatures, President Trump’s inauguration, and many things happening in Memphis and Shelby County. We are off to an interesting start in 2025.

As I ponder recent opportunities for change, I am thrilled to share the goals and outcomes of 2024 for Families Matter and Families Matter AFIRM. Our year was filled with events that helped shape our work as we supported children through our educational efforts with parents, specifically fathers.

Our preventive programs received many opportunities in 2024. Our work in schools and with collaborative partners supported over 535 students through the 12 Principles of Manhood Program, Connections, and Raising Highly Capable Kids. The sessions in schools are shown in the pictures below.

Several opportunities were presented to encourage fathers to attend training sessions. The following is a timeline of events that encouraged parent participation. The community outreach team worked tirelessly to support these engagements. I am incredibly proud to highlight a few events that supported the goal of engaging more than 750 parents.

In partnership with fathers who completed the co-parenting class sessions, the Crusaders, a group of fathers who enhance our efforts in fatherhood education, was created. The Crusaders were vital in supporting the engagement activities in different Memphis communities.

Below is a small list of the engagement activities. The comprehensive list is too extensive to include in this newsletter.

Our goal for 2025 is to explore more intensive partnerships to assist Memphis families. Our mission is to Strengthen Families, Change Lives, and Transform Memphis. We must be intentional as we work towards the mission of Families Matter and the activities of engagement with AFIRM (A Father’s Involvement Really Matters).

Happy New Year –

Carol A. Jackson

Executive Director

Verse of the Day

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
