February Message from Carol Jackson, Executive Director

I recently heard a story of a pregnant dog who suffered a car injury. The neglectful dog owner did not take care of the injured animal who later delivered puppies. Because of her injury, she dragged her hind legs rather than walking on them. When the injured dog gave birth and her puppies grew they also dragged their legs as they walked. When the owner inquired of the veterinarian why the dogs walked that way, the physician verified the puppies were not injured and that they simply learned how to walk by watching their mother. Imagine their brain telling them that was the correct way to walk. They emulated their mother. It was not what they thought to do – it was merely a reflection of what they saw and, therefore, is what they did.
And, so it is with children. They tend to do as their parents do.
Families Matter works intently to Strengthen Families, Change Lives and Transform Memphis through education and advocacy. The task of making the mission of Families Matter a reality can be daunting. However, by aligning with partnering organizations that share our missional values, this goal will be accomplished. The statement some individuals use loosely is that, “We must all come together.” However, to Strengthen Families, Change Lives, and Transform Memphis, we must do much more. We must come together, work together and present a united front. We, the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County, are all in this together.
During a recent visit to Germantown United Methodist Church, I had the privilege of sharing Families Matter with some of their congregants. Their interest in our programming and methods of educating and mentoring encouraged me and gave me hope that our positive male and teenage-focused educational efforts are making a difference in the lives of those we serve. That is why we must work together to aid the individuals and the families we assist. Remember, our mission is all about supporting CHILDREN by educating and mentoring young and seasoned men while offering healthy parenting education.
We recently launched a program of Families Matter called AFIRM (A Father’s Involvement Really Matters). This intervention program will intentionally work with low-income fathers and fathers in the Child Support System. For information on becoming involved, visit our website or call (901) 260-8520 or (901) 351-1124.
