March Message from Carol Jackson, Executive Director
Posted March 15, 2023
Imagine with me, if you will, a fifth-grade student who would rather be in his 12 Principles of Manhood class than go and participate in a Physical Education class with his peers. How rare! Yet, that is precisely what happened during a session at one of the elementary schools where the 12 Principles of Manhood is taught. This young student enjoys the instructions he receives from the gentlemen and mentors who work with him weekly. The teachings help build boys while encouraging them to become men of character, excellence, and integrity.
The men working with these students support them with reading while instructing them in the different weekly principles. The principles are taught using three strategies:
- Processing the Principle – during this session, students are involved in asking questions to learn why the principles should be processed.
- Possessing the Principle – The principle is developed and learned during this session. This is where students learn to articulate the principle by reciting it and putting it into sentences.
- Practicing the Principle – this is where students recognize their worth and significance as a person by putting the principle into practice in a real-life situation.
Students, teachers, and partnering organizations recognize the importance of this preventative method and request these teachings for their students. If you want to become a Principles of Manhood instructor, do not hesitate to contact Families Matter at www.familiesmattermemphis.org or contact Herman Jackson at Herman@fmmemphis.org, or call (901) 260-8521 for additional information. We are working intently to increase our involvement in elementary schools for the 2023 – 2024 school year.
Likewise, if you want to become involved with Families Matter, please do not hesitate to contact our office at www.familiesmattermemphis.org or Kheli Pearson at Kheli@fmmemphis.org.
