Because modern family units usually require every adult work outside the home, schools have become a vital avenue for reaching children and their families with vital life skills. Families Matter is currently providing curriculum and teacher training for 33 Shelby County Schools, reaching 4,000 students, ages 13-21. Through the Family and Consumer Sciences and Parent and Child Engagement (PACE) divisions, we have been asked to increase those numbers to reach 71 additional schools. Teachers have been so encouraged by the depth of the discussion and the possibility of behavior modification that they are inviting other teachers and their classes to join our facilitated discussions. Teachers themselves report learning much about healthy relationship skills.
