Before You Tie the Knot

Marriage is so much more than just saying “I do.” Although, many people are in love with the idea of marriage, many couples fail to prepare for the inevitable bumps in the road ahead. They may not be ready to handle the tough times. Today, approximately 50 percent of all new marriages end in divorce, but research has shown that couples who participate in premarital classes have more realistic expectations of marriage and a greater chance of successfully navigating the challenges that marriage may bring.

The purpose of Before You Tie the Knot, also known as Marriage 101, is to provide valuable instruction, resources, skills and hope to couples who are considering marriage. Before You Tie the Knot addresses the unique challenges that married couples most often struggle with in the beginning of a marriage, including:

  • Effective communication

  • Conflict management

  • Financial responsibility

  • Planning for the future

  • Children and parenting

Couples who receive at least four hours of valuable premarital education also save $60 on the marriage license fee in Shelby County.

Various organizations in Shelby County provide premarital education classes, and several local churches administer the Before You Tie the Knot class.
